2012 Olympics
The first years anniversary of London wining the
2012 Olympics was held on July 6th 2006. Events were held in London
to mark this celebration as it was cut short in 2005 by the tragic
events in London on July 7th 2005 when 4 suicide bomber killed
52 people in London. This year the winning of the 2012 Olympics
was at last celebrated in a fashion more befitting the gaining
of this massive and impressive event for London.
The 2012 Olympics will bring the Rowing to the Dorney Rowing lake
which is very close to Windsor. Recently this location has hosted
the 2005 Rowing World Cup very successfully and is where the training
for the Great Britain Rowing squad is held. The facilities are
without a doubt first class and equal to any other facilities
around the world.
With the 2006 Rowing World Championships being
held at the Dorney Rowing lake it is expected to attract over
1,000 athletes from 60 nations and more than 40,000 spectators
to Dorney Lake, the London 2012 Olympic venue, between 20th – 27th
August 2006. There were buses shuttling visitors from Windsor
over to the rowing lake as well as a park and ride based at
the Windsor Race Course were you could then get a boat straight
over the Thames river to the rowing lake.
With the good form showing with our athletes in
the Commonwealth Games 2006 we have a strong base to build on
for the European Championships later in 2006.
More information on the event and he local impact
will be added to this page as it becomes available.
The rowing lake had been hurrying to finnish the
return lake before the 2006 World Rowing Championship started
in August 2006. This is an integral part of the facilities and
will definitely improve the organisation of the event.
Currently the lake is being used for many additional
events including running and Triathlon events.
The main comment to come out of the large event
that have been held at the Dorney rowing lake so far is that
due to the relative youth of the facility the wind does effect
the course and in particular the outside lanes more. This should
be much better by 2012 Olympics as the trees planted around the
facility should be much larger by then.
